Here’s what the ‘i’ in ‘iPhone’ really stands for

Maybe you believed it stood for ‘internet’ – or perhaps you just assumed it was their way of being individual.
And while both of these things partly refer to the use of the lowercase ‘i’, it doesn’t entirely revolve around the world wide web.
Launched in 1998, the iMac marked the beginning of the first modern Apple product – and it also became the first to be named with an ‘i’.
It was launched as the internet was becoming increasingly popular, with most customers only wanting the product itself for the internet
But, while we’re able to reminisce on the excitement we felt as we heard our internet dial up, and the true terror that overcame us when someone decided to use the landline while we were using the internet (pure torture), we may not all be able to remember where the description of the product we were using.
During the launch of the iMac, Steve Jobs showed a slide with a number of different labels: internet, individual, instruct, inform and inspire.
And, describing Apple as a ‘personal computer company’, he said the letter ‘i’ also meant more to the company than those five labels. Yes, it turns out there’s a sixth ‘i’: Instructive.

‘Although this product is born to network, it also is a beautiful stand-alone product, Jobs said.
‘We are targeting it also for education. They [consumers] want to buy these. And it is perfect for most of the things they do in instruction.’
And as the internet grew to be a massive part of everyday life, so did Apple’s products. After the incredible success the iMac bought the company, they decided to turn the little ‘i’ into a global brand, placing it at the head of their products throughout each new release.
Which while has given them a trademark, also adds to the reminiscence of the old days, and the true meaning behind their product.
