Xbox One gamers could soon be playing alongside PlayStation 4 owners in the same game, according to a new announcement by Microsoft’s head of indie publishing.
Cross-network play between Xbox One and PC games is already confirmed, starting with Rocket League later this year. But that’s something that’s already happened in the past, with games such as Shadowrun on the Xbox 360.
ID@Xbox boss Chris Carla went further and said that, ‘in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.’
‘This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.’
‘Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players’, he added.
Since there isn’t an Xbox One version of Mario Kart 8 to cross-play with it’s pretty obvious that these comments can refer only to the PlayStation 4.
And although Carla’s remit is usually limited to indie games he clarified via Twitter that cross-network play isn’t just for indie titles and can include AAA retail games as well.
However, what Sony would have to say about any of this is not hard to guess, so we wouldn’t bet on crossover battles in The Division or Call Of Duty just yet.
